Exhausts: the sequel
23 May 2021
How did it end with the walking adventure anyway? In September 2016, I (owner of #83) last posted on this website and I still owe you the sequel to the story.
The trip to England
In September 2016 we (my wife and I) took our No. 83 from Amsterdam to the workshop of Quicksilver in Cullempton (UK). The travel report is on Twitter and can still be found viathis link.
It was a wonderful adventure to take the M35 all the way from Amsterdam to South-West England. First by boat from Hoek from Holland to Harwich. The specially purchased right exterior mirror had to be mounted there. Then we had to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road. We drove around London (with the M35 on the M25) and via some tourist stops (Bath, Clevedon) to Cullompton, where we reported to the Quicksilver workshop on the agreed day.
Before we went to England Sander Aalderink had already sent the so-called "patterns" (old walks) to Quicksilver. On the basis of that .patterns , Quicksilver had already produced a new stainless steel exhaust. They had chosen to do so as little as possible manually and as much as possible. For this reason, the new exhaust had a cylindrical front and rear silencer (as defined in version 1.1.2). More about this later.
In Cullompton Quicksilver has dismantled the old original exhaust and installed the new one. We mainly checked that the exhaust fit well and didn't touch anything. The pipe between the front and rear damper swings around the rear carrying arm at the M35 and may not touch it in any of the positions of the hydropneumatic suspension.
With the new exhaust we drove back to the Netherlands. I could not take my original exhaust in the M35 and this was later returned by Quicksilver.
Below a few photos of the trip and of the walks.

Back in the Netherlands I drove to Sander and we reviewed the exhaust. Our conclusion was that the exhaust failed in particular on the following points:
. The noise reduction was insufficient
. It was promised that the version would approach the original exhaust as much as possible. Form and construction would be similar to the exhaust produced by Quicksilver earlier in 2011 for M35 No. 122. However, this was not the case.
After some consultation, Quicksilver agreed with our criticism and decided to adjust the exhaust and still produce it manually instead of machine (which is called "Quicksilver exhaust 2"). This new version was not cylindrical but flattened and was also equipped with an additional heat resistant and noise dampening scale.
A copy of this version 2 exhaust was sent by Quicksilver and mounted by Sander under my M35 No. 83. This new version of the exhaust was better. The sound level was fine and the design met our expectations (although it is obviously not a replica of the original exhaust).
Eventually there are about 15 of these exhaust systems supplied by Quicksilver to various M35 owners.
The final opinions on the exhaust differ. For the purists under the M35 owners this exhaust is obviously not suitable. Others do not consider the noise reduction sufficient. On the other hand, it was certainly an affordable solution for owners whose old exhaust no longer muffles because (like my old exhaust) there are holes in it and the interior work has disappeared.
